Homework
Standards of Learning (SOLs) and Physics by Inquiry, Part I
Due Monday, Sept. 23, 2002

One of the goals of this course is to address physical science topics from the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) for public schools.   The SOLs are meant to reflect national standards of education and current understanding of the processes of learning.   This assignment pertains to some of these SOLs.   You will need to go to the following web site to view the VA science SOLs.

The SOLs are labeled by a number/letter then a number (ex. 4.1).  The first letter/number is the grade designation, the second is the specific SOL number.  For each grade, there is a  X.1 SOL that represents "overarching themes" across the sciences.  These "overarching themes" will be covered in each of the 3 inquiry courses currently being offered at Sweet Briar.  These themes are essentially SOLs that deal with science as a process.  As you know by now, this process is one of the most important parts of our course.

Your Assignment:
Read the goals/introduction for the SOLs on pages 7-9.
Read the X.1 SOLs for the sciences for grades K-6 and Physical Science.

Choose 7 bullet items from the K.1-6.1, PS.1 SOLs that you feel we have covered.  Try not to choose all 7 from 1 or 2 grade levels.   For each bullet item you choose, write a  brief description of the activity we did and why the activity matches the SOL you chose.    Each bullet item description need not be more than a few sentences.
