Physics 103 Test 1 Review
Fall 2000

test date: Friday Oct. 6

help session: Thursday Oct 5 time to be determined,  of course, come by my office with questions

Bring questions for the review session.   I am not bringing any prepared lecture, it is your responsibility to ask questions.

This test will be given under the rules of the Honor Code.  Bring a calculator, but using equations programmed into your calculator IS NOT ALLOWED.

This test will cover chapters 1-4 of Halliday and Resnick and everything I did in class concerning that material.  This includes demos and conceptual questions. Missing class is not an excuse for not understanding this information.

We did skip a couple sections in Halliday and Resnick, you will not be responsible for those.

The test will most likely consist of four or five problems (like those on the homework) with several parts, three or four conceptual multiple choice questions (similar in style to those we did in class), and possibly some short answer questions.  You may be required to  supply a reason with your answer for full credit.

You will be given 55 minutes to complete the test.  Remember to do the problems you know how to do first and do the more difficult problems later.  Budget your time wisely, if you get stuck for too long, move on.

Generally speaking you should feel comfortable with the following (though this is not necessarily an exhaustive list.....):
do unit conversions.
understand and know how to use/find  displacement, average velocity and acceleration, instantaneous velocity and acceleration (such as understanding the different plots, x vs t, v vs t, a vs t)
use vectors, find their components, magnitude and direction, etc.
understand how to do 1 and 2 dimensional motion problems,eg. free fall, projectile motion (there WILL be a projectile motion problem, know how to do it!)
uniform circular motion

How should you study?

Know how to do all of the assigned homework problems and understand all the conceptual questions from class.  Read the chapters and understand how to do the examples in the text.  If you have not done well on the homework you need to fully understand your old hw to do well on the test.   If you find the homework easy, you should do well on the test.

Equations

Go here for the equation sheet I will pass out with your test.  These equations will be supplied for the test.  I do not think it is especially helpful to memorize special case equations, as one is likely to use it in the wrong situation.  It is up to you to understand the equations.  I will supply you with any conversion factors you may need, but you do need to know the prefixes I told you about from Chapter 1.
