Math Methods HW 8

Due October 29, 1999

Fletcher, Chapter 4. Problems 24, 27, 30.

Each is worth about twice the average homework problem.

In addition to finding the Fourier series for each function, I want you to graph the Fourier series for different values of n. Recall that as n increases the Fourier series will more closely match the original function. The point of the Fourier series is to write out a periodic function in terms of sines and cosines.

For each problem include a computer-generated plot of the Fourier series for:

the first term, n = 1

the first three terms, n = 1,2,3

the first 5 terms, n = 1,2,3,4,5.

When you enter the Fourier series into the computer for #24 and 25 you will need to set L = 1.

You can use any program you want. I am not that familiar with what you may have used in the past. A program like DERIVE, MATHCAD, MAPLE, MATHEMATICA, or possibly EXCEL or KALEIDAGRAPH should work.

If you have questions about this ask me.

So that you know if you are getting the correct answer…..
